What if the whole class can care for the plants and see them grow daily, from seeding to harvesting? I wish our kids could do that because I believe they would feel the absolute joy of harvesting by doing that.
It is hard to take learners to the garden to check the plants daily, but growing microgreens in the classroom makes it possible. Besides, we can produce them indoors, even in winter, and some seeds will be ready to harvest in just ten days!
4th Graders Grew Microgreens in the Classroom
B4B (a 4th grade class) planted seeds during STEAM class on 12/05 Tuesday. We assigned a group of learners to water & take a photo of the plants daily. I appreciate that Mrs. Jones, the teacher of B4B, was supportive of the activity.
The learners took great care of the plants from the first day to the last. They were excited to tell me about the sprouted seeds on day 4 and then harvested and tasted the microgreens on day 9.
They cut them in small groups, taking turns while others did the class work. Some learners felt so attached to their plants and didn’t want to harvest them because they wished their microgreens lived longer.
Tasting
First, the learners tasted the microgreens only and then with crackers and cheese. I wanted to add some festive feeling to tasting, so I am glad they loved them. I try to offer a fantastic tasting experience for kids because they will remember it better if we evoke their emotions.
From seeding to harvesting, they were responsible and cared for the microgreens well. It took only nine days, but I hope the learners had a wonderful growing experience.
After we harvested, we took out the soil. The roots grew so well, and the learners were impressed to see them!
