Where Are Bluebonnets In The Fall?

Bluebonnets At Our School

Our school is the kind of place that you want to capture in photos when the bluebonnets bloom.

The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas and is appreciated just like the cherry blossoms are in Japan.

It’s a beautiful sight to see many classes coming outside to take group photos at our school during this time, and I love being able to witness the spectacle. The Nature Walk becomes particularly glamorous during this season.

Observations In The Fall

Yes, bluebonnets typically bloom in spring, but have you ever wondered how they are doing in the fall? Have they already sprouted?

Since October, we have been monitoring the bluebonnets during our monthly Nature Walk. On October 19th, we observed that some bluebonnets had sprouted, with some displaying only baby leaves and others with both baby and true leaves.

During a walk on October 23rd, our third graders scattered bluebonnet seeds near the front loop, and in just a week, some had already sprouted!

In the following two months, we observed more sprouted bluebonnets on November 8th and many more with true leaves on December 5th, despite the field being mowed the day before.

It is important to note that bluebonnets bloom with beautiful blue flowers in spring, but they grow roots and leaves long beforehand.

Although we are entering a colder season, we will continue to observe the bluebonnets and note any changes over time
